As the National Planning Manager, you will play a key role in creating a control tower environment to ensure effective service delivery, optimal route planning, operational excellence.You will oversee a team of planners, working closely with key stakeholders in commercial and domestic sales, as well as transport managers. Your data-driven approach will be essential in monitoring and optimising performance, making sure customer expectations are met, driving operational improvements.

Job Description

  • Proven experience in a national planning role, ideally within a logistics environment.
  • Strong leadership and team management experience, with the ability to motivate, develop, and guide a team of planners.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and generate actionable insights for improved performance.
  • Experience working with key stakeholders, including commercial, domestic sales teams, and transport managers, to drive cross-functional collaboration.
  • Proficiency with route planning software and systems (experience with control tower or transport management systems is a plus).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively manage relationships across the business.
  • Knowledge of transport regulations and best practices across England and Wales is desirable.



Key responsibilities:

  • Route Planning & Management:
    • Plan and optimise daily routes for the fleet across England and Wales, ensuring efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and timely delivery.
    • Utilise data and planning tools to monitor traffic patterns, fuel consumption, and delivery times to enhance route optimisation.
  • Performance Monitoring:
    • Develop and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) to track the effectiveness of route planning and service delivery.
    • Regularly assess and report on service delivery performance, highlighting areas of improvement and implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration:
    • Work closely with commercial and domestic sales teams to ensure customer requirements are met and aligned with transport capabilities.
    • Liaise with transport managers to address operational challenges and optimise fleet usage.
  • Team Management:
    • Lead and manage a team of planners, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure high performance and continuous improvement.
    • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and innovation within the planning team.
  • Control Tower Environment Development:
    • Build and establish a control tower environment within the business, centralising operations and creating visibility across the entire transport function.
    • Implement systems and processes that allow for real-time decision-making and agile response to changing conditions.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Identify and drive continuous improvement initiatives within the planning function, focusing on enhancing operational efficiency, reducing costs, and improving service delivery.
    • Utilise data analysis and feedback from stakeholders to optimise planning and routing processes.
