Dr. Jo Perkins, a chartered psychologist renowned for her work coaching leaders. Dr. Jo brings a unique psychological perspective to leadership, helping leaders understand and influence behaviour within their teams.
We explored the critical role of effective leadership in talent management. More specifically, how retaining and developing talent isn't just about managing tasks—it's about understanding and influencing human behaviour.
Dr. Jo highlighted how psychological insights can provide deeper understanding, making leadership more effective, especially in HR contexts.
1. The power of collaboration and psychological approaches: Effective leadership isn't just a solo effort; it requires a team approach. By leveraging psychological insights, leaders can better understand their teams, improving their ability to retain and develop talent. This isn't just about managing tasks—it's about creating a positive, productive work environment where everyone can thrive.
2. The benefits of having a psychologist on board: Psychologists use science and evidence-based tools to create tailored interventions that address specific objectives.
Their ethical practices and expertise help overcome psychological barriers, leading to deeper, more impactful results. This investment in psychological approaches can significantly enhance leadership effectiveness and provide a better return on investment.
3. Adapting to the changing leadership landscape: We reflected on how the workplace has changed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. There's a growing recognition of the importance of employee well-being and mental health. Leaders are now focusing more on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) and adapting to new norms like flexible and hybrid work models. Employees are seeking more than just a job—they want purpose and fulfilment. Leaders need to facilitate this sense of purpose to retain talent and enhance performance.
4. Managing generational diversity: Today's workforce is incredibly diverse, with up to five different generations working together. Leading such diverse teams requires skill and sensitivity, as each generation brings its own perspectives, skills, and attitudes. Leaders face the challenge of meeting these diverse expectations while navigating rapid changes in the workplace, and so effectively balancing traditional leadership skills with modern demands, like advanced people management and technological literacy, is essential.
Our live poll during the event revealed a significant majority of leaders (around 80%) noticed a step change in their roles, indicating that leadership has become more complex and demanding. This aligns with the trends and challenges discussed during the webinar, underscoring the need for leaders to be adaptable and proactive in today's dynamic environment.
Dr. Jo introduced the Hot Cross Bun model of psychology, which helps individuals understand the interplay between their physiological, cognitive, emotional, and behavioural states.
By becoming more aware of these domains, leaders can better manage their well-being and support their teams effectively. This holistic approach is crucial for navigating the complexities of modern leadership. Watch the recording to dive further into this model and learn how you can use it to tackle both personal and professional pressures.
